Ah summer, talks of minimal makeup and days by the water.. or if you're in the parentage of people like me who spend on average one week away in summer, then that's a load of rubbish. The truth is this romantic idea of summer we have engrained in our minds from American movies just doesn't exist, in the UK summer consists of the occasional beer garden and more than occasional complaining. Yes while i'm on holiday i go makeup free during the day, (you won't find any glamorous pool side shots from this sweaty tomato coloured blogger) but, while i'm at home if I'm completely honest my makeup routine doesn't really get paired down at all. Shock, horror. I still wear full coverage foundation in summer, ya girl has acne scars to cover and a day to get on with. This is my summer makeup / products i've been loving on my face recently.
Nobody wants to read 6 paragraphs about concealer anymore (or..do they?). It's hot outside, you've probably got somewhere to be, and my t-shirt is sticking to my back against my faux leather ikea office chair so we'll just get into it.
I had a 5 year love affair with one very popular Zoella endorsed drugstore concealer, you know the one - that has now come to an abrupt end. The iT Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye has taken over, and although i'm still working with a sample size tube i can't see it disappearing too quickly. This stuff is like no other concealer i've ever tried; the coverage is just insane, and when i say you need a tiny amount i mean forget pea sized and think more "quarter of a grain of rice sized".
Things to note with this:
- The finish is dewy, you need to set this if you're planning on putting eyeshadow over the top.
- I blend it with my fingers, i don't have time for fiddling with tiny brushes around my eyes when it comes to blending concealer. Dab dab dab and I'm away.
- A little goes a long way, seriously i ended up wasting a good bit when i first used it because i didn't realise the coverage was so strong.
Worth every single penny and i will be picking up a full size in this once i get through it.
Sticking with base products i've been reaching for 2 different primers over the last few weeks; it's quite handy they're both at completely different ends of the pricing spectrum, so something for everyone here!
First is the MUA cosmetics Pro / Base Oil Free primer. This is so lovely and cooling, instantly this feels hydrating on the skin and provides actual refreshment before applying foundation. It's oil free so perfect for my oily skin, but also good for the time of year in general where i tend to get.. face sweats. Makeup goes on like a dream over the top and helps to improve the finish of foundation rather than messing it up, oh and it's like £5.
If you're looking to spend a little bit more for a primer, then my all time favourite brand Estée Lauder have just released a primer to go with their double wear line. It's no secret Double Wear is my go to foundation and the primer is the perfect companion - it has the highest spf i've ever heard of in a primer too, 45. This has a really thin consistency and blends into the skin seamlessly, without leaving your face white like you've just applied a suncream. It's a match made in heaven if you're already using Double Wear foundation, which doesn't move even in 33 degree heat - who says you can't wear proper foundation in summer?
I have to admit i'm not the best at setting my face, Double Wear lasts no matter what so i got lazy .. but ever since i started using the new Estée Lauder Set + Refresh Perfecting Makeup Mist i've been a setting spray devotee. It does what it says on the tin: it sets your makeup once you've just applied it, refreshes if you've had your makeup on for a while and need a boost, and generally perfects the look on your skin. Any excess bits of powder that might be floating round are dissolved away and smoothed out, your face is cooled and foundation looks brand new once again. I went out yesterday evening without applying this beforehand and really felt the difference, i could feel the sun on my face and instantly knew i forgot to apply the spray. I won't be without this now, and it has a nice smell too which used to put me off a lot of the others on the market. The only problem is I'm probably using way too much because i like it so much, i'm like a mad woman armed with a setting spray and a very wet face.
Eyes have to be my favourite place to apply makeup all year round, and in summer the general gist is bronzy.
I'm a fan of a multi use product so for my eyes i've been using a few dabs of the Nudestix Nudies in Bondi Bae all over face colour. I'm not fond of creams on the face but i'm partial to them on the eyes and this is so incredibly creamy. It glides on and i always top it off with a different colour shimmer everyday.
To give my eyes slightly more definition without being harsh i've also been using the Nudestix Rock n' Roller eyeliner in Bronze Pattina. I don't try to do any dramatic wings or anything with this, i just tend to do a blended out bronzy line to make my eyes look a little bit bigger. This has great colour payoff and the roller tip makes application really easy.
I'm a fan of big old really black volumising mascaras, and my panic L'Oréal Lash Paradise purchase at the airport has become my absolute go to. It's the best drugstore dupe i've found for the Charlotte Tilbury mascaras for less than half the price. Need i say more?
You will have seen the Charlotte Tilbury Instant look in a palette around these parts before so i won't go into it too much. The only thing i will say is that i've used this everyday i've worn makeup for the past year, it's one of the best makeup purchases i've ever made and i really don't know how I'm going to cope when i hit pan on this. The powders are amazing quality and i think i can confidently say the best i've ever used, CT you deserve an OBE.. or something.
Before i go about dowsing my face in the Estée Lauder setting spray i set my face with powder. Recently I've put down my high end compact and picked up the MUA Pro / Base Full coverage matte pressed powder. Summer is a shiny face time and although i don't like a completely matte finish, i definitely need to set my foundation with powder before my shower in setting spray. This provides a finished look whilst not breaking the bank.
Finally, no summer face would be complete without an abundance of highlighter and Bobbi Brown's highlighting powder is beautiful to say the least. It's shimmery and a little goes a long way, but i'm kinda fond of being a little bit disco ball ish in summer so i don't mind going over board. They've added new shades to their collection in summery pinks, champagnes and golds.
Lips are definitely something i change up in summer, i go for lighter balm finishes and less intense colour. So Fresh's Sugar Advanced Therapy Lip Treatments are perfect for this time of year, i've got two colours in my collection: Dream, a bright pop of pink and Spice a (dare i say it) more autumnal hue deep nude. Sorry for bringing the A word up so early but this definitely has an autumnal vibe, it's a colour i would be drawn to all year round though and is a beautiful finish for summer.
Last but not least we have a lip treatment. I know we usually associate lip care with the colder months but it's something I'm trying to incorporate all year round, and the Fresh Sugar Lip Wonder Drops are helping me do just that. This is almost like a liquid exfoliant for your lips, with AHAs from sugar, fruit extracts and hibiscus extract to gently work away at dead skin. It's a combined lip treatment and primer, which perfectly preps my lips for summer colours and leaves them feeling smoother than ever.
