Simplifying my holiday makeup routine

Simplifying my holiday makeup routine

As i write this i am a few thousand feet in the air. I’m not sure if i’m a productive plane person, but i guess we’ll find out if i actually get through this by the time the flight is over.

It seems appropriate given the whole plane situation, that today’s post is all about my holiday makeup routine. I’m a full face girl, but on holiday i do like to keep it minimal – i never wear makeup during the day on holiday because who has time for that when there’s a pool to be in? I do however like to dress it up a bit in the evening, the hotel staff probably think there’s two of me staying in the one room. It’s a bit of a princess diaries style transformation when i go out for dinner after spending the day looking like a sweaty tomato, but if Hannah Montana could have the best of both worlds why can’t i?

The base:

I’m a creature of habit, my dream combination of Estee Lauder foundation, Collection concealer and Pixi primer stay firmly in my holiday makeup bag. It’s not the most exciting opener to a post but, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. The pixi primer gives my foundation and glow from underneath, so i don’t end up looking like the ghost haunting southern Spain of an evening.

The face:

Ladies and gentlemen (mainly ladies lets be honest, but hi 5%) i introduce to you, the main event. This is the Charlotte Tilbury “Natural beauty” face palette, yes you heard me right, an entire face in a palette. This has streamlined my holiday makeup routine and probably will continue to streamline my daily face when i get home. I grabbed this on sale for £29 down from £49; it’s got three eyeshadows, a bronzer, two blushers and one highlighter – but you could probably mix it up a bit and use all of the powers as eyeshadows so the looks are endless. Charlotte Tilbury is one of those dream brands where every product feels like a gift a princess would receive, so i had to snap it up on sale, it has a great mirror too so it’s a perfect travel companion.

The shades are very pigmented, so much so on first use i rather excitedly dipped my blusher brush into the pop shade and ended up with two pretty damn pink cheeks, a little goes a long way kids. I was worried the highlight would be too subtle but boy was i wrong, it’s the perfect golden glow and photographs really well too, you know, if it wasn’t ‘grammed did it even happen?

My love affair with liquid eyeliner is well and truly over, (17 year old me can be heard shuddering in the distance clutching a Rimmel black liquid pen) it has been for a while now, so in keeping with my recent makeup phases eyeliner stayed at home. Eyeshadow is catered for within the Charlotte Tilbury palette, but i must admit i snuck in the Urban Decay naked heat in my bag after photographing this and i pretty much stuck to that for shadow.

For mascara i packed the Too Faced Better Than Sex, which isn’t my favourite mascara, Charlotte has my loyalties with that one too, but i had this in a mini size so i bought it to save space in the dreaded sandwich bag sized liquid allowance. Finally my good old Freedom brow pomade also made it into my holiday routine, where would i be without slightly sub par brow skills eh?

It’s saying something that i only bought two lipsticks with me across three trips, the new Rimmel stay matte lipsticks particularly the shade “By My Baby” has become my go to shade. It’s the pinkish brown nude i’ve been trying to find for years and the type of lipstick i’ll actually repurchase time and time again. Read my full review of the Rimmel Stay matte lipsticks here.

Remember at the start of this post, when i said i started writing this while on a plane? I’m now in a car and it’s a week later, it turns out i am not a productive plane person. Planes are for staring out the window, drinking over priced tomato soup and falling in and out of sleep every 10 minutes. What’s in your holiday makeup bag? – Maria x
