I’m not one to spend money going to the salon for waxing every few weeks, but because i’m lazy (or “time saving” ) when it comes to hair removal, i’ve always wanted a way to remove my hair that means I won’t have to do it again for a number of weeks. Lately i’ve been using the Braun Silk-Épil 5 to do just that, hello more time in the sun and less time making myself ready for the sun!
You might have heard me say in past posts that I used to work at a chemist. While I worked there so many people would buy hair removal devices as gifts, and I have to admit back then I didn’t really understand why. Now i’ve been using the Braun Silk-Épil 5 for a while, I feel like I finally get why so many mothers would come in and buy these for their daughters, or friends and couples would come in and look at them together – It’s a convenience thing. I didn’t realise you could get better results than waxing at home, without having to pay salon prices with an Epilator .. trust me if I knew this back then I would’ve added this straight to the top of my birthday wishlist.
I’m a practical present person so something like this is exciting to me. When I think about it, buying this for someone isn’t just buying them a Braun Epilator, it’s literally buying them the time back that they would’ve spent shaving or money they would’ve spent waxing. Seen as i’ve written about my “glasses – wearing in the shower shaving” antics in the past, it’s pretty clear I like to avoid spending as much time on hair removal as possible.
So if like me, you used to think epilators were basically just electric razors you’re about to get an education..
Epilators work by tweezing the hair at the root, think of it like plucking your eyebrows but on a much more effective, faster, larger scale on your legs and other body parts. Just like when you first tweeze your eyebrows for the first time, this does take some getting used to. I won’t lie, this isn’t a pain free method of hair removal but judge it on the same scale as waxing – if you’re fine with waxing you’ll be fine with epilating.
One thing that really puts me off waxing is having to wait until the hair has grown back enough to wax it and although the Braun Silk-Épil 5 works in a similar way to waxing in that it rips out the hair, epilating is actually more effective because it can remove much shorter hairs. This means I can pretty much epilate the hairs as soon as they do start growing back again after 4 weeks, even hairs as small as a grain of sand.
Hair removal comes down to a lot of personal preference so the Braun Silk-Épil 5 is literally customisable to anyone’s choices, whether you want to epilate on your bed next to a plug socket, in the shower while you wash your hair or while having a soak in the bath. Once you charge the Silk-Épil 5 for one hour you’ll have half an hour of cord free usage, which in my experience is plenty of time to do both legs. Or you can use the epilator while plugged in, but obviously only using the corded option away from water.
I like to use my Silk-Épil 5 while in the bath, I find the warm water helps to soften the area and make everything less painful. I know from friends who use Braun epilators, once i’ve used this for a while i’ll build up tolerance and my hairs will get used to being pulled from the root, but for now i’m using the underwater method. It’s also 100% waterproof so you don’t need to worry about getting the Silk-Épil 5 wet, to maintain the device all I do is remove the skin contact cap and brush away any remaining hairs with the little brush provided.
I’m saving a lot of time and money using my Braun Silk-Épil 5, if you’re looking for the perfect gift, really consider looking into electrical beauty – after all what could be a better gift than smooth skin, time and money saving practicality!
